Sweet Brenda and Him
Keepin' The Music Alive and Lively!

This popularity was demonstrated as we walked to Sweet Brenda’s and Him RV for the interview at the Nothin’ Fancy festival. What should have been a five minute stroll turned into a twenty minute sojourn, with multiple chats and howdy’s along the way from people calling out and coming up to them. As we neared the RV, a golf cart came whizzing up and stopped. I was thinking, now who in the world…? It was none other than Rhonda Vincent and her Husband just stopping by to say their ‘howdy’s’ and catch up on old times. Brenda and Calvin tell stories of bluegrass stars staying at their house, fixing breakfast and even cleaning before they leave for a festival. If there is a bluegrass event in Central Virginia, the Lawson’s are at the center of it. Whether emceeing as radio personalities or promoters, they are mainstays in the bluegrass festivals and shows.

The popularity of the Sweet Brenda and Him radio broadcast is supported by the 100 plus call ins they receive in three hours. Not only do people call but Sweet Brenda acknowledges each of those listeners on the air. Their weekly shows are now reaching around the world by web stream broadcasting, which has increased their popularity and demand for their presence. They are now requested to DJ private parties and just recently were booked to emcee a festival in Kentucky.

Being involved in Bluegrass has never been about them - it is about the music. They support youth outreach and

encourage the bluegrass youth to participate in the "Youth Band" at the Amelia Festivals. They can talk easily to the big names in Bluegrass but also never forget the up and comers and the local bands. All of whom get air time on their shows and who Brenda introduces with the same enthusiasm that she introduces the nationally known acts.

Their respect and love for the music comes through when they talk about the "emotion and soul" that Bluegrass has and the feeling in the music that so many relate to. Calvin sums it all up when he says, "It is about the music. We try to let the music be the show."

VaBluegrass.com is happy to call Sweet Brenda and Him friends of ours. However, we are not unique. They are friends to many. We wish them a Happy Radio Anniversary as they embark on another year of - Keeping the Music Alive in Virginia.
